Mount Cross Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with nearly 3.3 million members in more than 8,900 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. This means that our small congregation is a member of a larger church body that can serve Christ and one another in many more ways.
3 God’s grace has been given to me. So here is what I say to every one of you. Don’t think of yourself more highly than you should. Be reasonable when you think about yourself. Keep in mind the faith God has given to each of you. 4 Each of us has one body with many parts. And the parts do not all have the same purpose. 5 So also we are many persons. But in Christ we are one body. And each part of the body belongs to all the other parts. Romans 12:3-5 (NIRV)
We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God's grace. Liberated by our faith, we embrace you as a whole person--questions, complexities and all. Join us as we do God's work in Christ's name for the life of the world.
Our relief and development work is pursued and accomplished through a variety of bold, active ministries and initiatives:
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.” Colossians 2:6–7a.
Rooted and built in Jesus! This is the core of our work as the ELCA walks with more than 80 companion churches in other countries to participate in God’s reconciling mission through proclamation and service. Participating in these relationships, ELCA members see how people’s lives are touched by the gospel, how their lives are transformed and renewed, and how their communities live in hope.
We are a publicly engaged church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. We do God’s work in the world, the work of restoring and reconciling communities. We pursue justice and seek peace no matter how long the journey or wide the chasm. Because we are grounded in God’s love and forgiveness, we are well equipped to live and serve here and now, in the world, with all its complexities, tensions and ambiguities.
Members of the ELCA work and volunteer with a variety of ELCA-related groups, networks and programs across the country and around the world. ELCA related ministries have unique stories and roles adding to the larger story that makes up the ELCA.
These related ministries of the ELCA include:
The Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) Inc. humbly serves the Navajo community of Rock Point, AZ. Every day, our 100% Navajo staff feed the hungry, prioritize Christian and cultural learning, focus on community engagement, and work towards fulfilling basic community needs. In our spiritual and social work, we strive to embody and teach the grace of Jesus and listen to the call of the gospel to serve one another in love
Caring members of the Payson community came together in 2019, to address the needs of homeless individuals and families within our community. The doors to the warming shelter (housed on the campus of Mount Cross Lutheran Church) were opened in December 2019. As individuals, we set aside political and religious differences, united with one basic purpose, to serve those in need. This led to the creation of the Payson Homeless and Homeless Veterans Initiative, a non-profit 501 (c) (3).
