Pastor Scott Stein

Rev. Scott Stein, after graduating with degrees from Purdue University, left a 21-year career in engineering - which included service on the task force that recommended postponing the launch of 1986's ill-fated Space Shuttle Challenger - to serve something higher in a different realm. Now he's more concerned with erosion of faith, finding people without a church and inspiring them with God's word to whatever degree he can.

"It took years for me to be convinced that God wanted me to be a pastor," he says of the call. "It wasn't what I expected." Stein had grown up going to Lutheran churches and school in Illinois. The idea of stepping up to a lifetime ministry occurred to him as early as 1990.

In 1999, with his wife MarJean and their son, he left Utah and the engineering world behind and went to Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in South Carolina. In 2003, he was ordained as a pastor at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He also served in other ways, like volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and in soup kitchens.

Stein decided to return to Utah, and with some pastoral experience behind him, served as a "mission developer" for the Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

"I always say to be a mission developer you have to be crazy enough to do it," he said with a laugh.

Nothing makes Stein happier than the opportunity to give people a spiritual place to call home.

Wesley E. Hathaway Jr. - Praise Team / Praise Band Leader

Wes Hathaway is our Praise Team Leader at Mount Cross. The Praise Team leads worship every Sunday at the 10:30 contemporary service. He is also the director of our Praise Band (Spiritual Warfare), an inter-generational group of musicians that play at the 10:30 service the last Sunday of each month.

Wes was born into a Christian music environment. The Hathaway Family has been involved in music ministry for over 60 years. His early childhood memories revolve around music in the home and music in church. He began his music education on the accordion at the age of five and was soon playing at church with his family. By the time he entered college at ENC in 1962, Wes was proficient at the piano, organ and drums. He had the opportunity to perform and travel with The Masters and The King's Men, 'southern-style' gospel quartets, as piano accompanist.

Wes joined our staff at Mount Cross in March of 2002. He has lived in Payson since 1992 and is the director of Payson Academy of Music, which offers private music instruction for students on the piano, guitar and violin.

"O Lord, I ask for guidance in everything I do; and pray You'll make my music, an instrument for You"

Janet Ehrhardt, Music Director, Traditional Service

Janet Ehrhardt leads our traditional worship service each Sunday morning. The compositions she selects and performs as Prelude to our traditional service are always inspirational. A gifted organist and pianist, she directs the Chancel Choir that sings at the 8:30AM traditional service and for special services (Christmas Eve, and Ecumenical services on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Tuesday before Thanksgiving). Janet also presents special sacred choral music and cantatas at Christmas and Easter and directs the Mount Cross Handbells.

Lenore White - Administrative Assistant

Lenore is a native of Arizona. She was born in Phoenix and moved to Payson in 1977. She met her first husband through his mother (her co-worker at Safeway). During their 7 years of marriage, they had 4 beautiful children: Heather, Zachary, Joshua, and Seth. She was a single mother of the 4 for about 4 years, until she renewed a past friendship with the man who is currently her husband. They have added two little girls to the family, Elizabeth and April. Lenore is kept busy dealing with her Brady Bunch and is enjoying her position with Mount Cross.
